Dapper man about town, Charlie Elphicke, the Conservative parliamentary candidate for Dover and Deal, seen here last night April 27 at the DCAL selection night at the Dover Town Hall. In the picture with Charlie is our very own Mandie Sehmbi, the DCAL Chairman, the lady in white, who organised the whole show, and a selection of the gorgeous girls taking part in the Event.
The Picture on the left was taken last year at the Dover Regatta. All the lovely DCAL girls posed successfully in front of our stand. Some of these girls will be standing down now after a great year. The DCAL Selection night takes place this Sunday April 27 and the doors open at the Town Hall at 2pm.
There is more information below so please scroll down to the DCAL-Ramada Tie Up feature.
But back for a moment to the Regatta and our Doverforum stand. It is unlikely that we will be having a stand this year. Last year we were unable to prepare the stand properly due to work pressure elsewhere so it was a tad dull. Our good friend Roger Walkden helped out greatly though and also at the same time promoted his Dover Loyalty Scheme.
The girls are seen holding leaflets for the Dover Loyalty Scheme and Doverforum.
Well done girls on a successful year. ___________________________________________________________________________________________
EXCITING NEW PLAY FACILITIES
FOR DOVER AND WALMER
Innovative new play areas are on the way for Pencester Gardens in Dover and Marke Wood in Walmer, with work on exciting facilities set to begin in Dover today and Walmer next week. The new facilities follow a successful £257,702 bid to the Big Lottery Fund’s Children’s Play Programme.
Modern facilities will include themed areas built to encourage creative play, and will feature landscaped design and structured equipment. The Pencester Gardens area will include a castle theme and a zip wire feature, and the Marke Wood design includes a multi-use climbing frame and a special circular story-telling area.
The work is being funded by BIG’s Children’s Play Programme, with Dover District Council. Designs for the play areas were agreed following extensive public consultation and it is anticipated work will be completed by the end of June.
This follows news of the planning approval for a major state-of-the-art concrete skate park at Victoria Park in Deal, substantially funded by Kent County Council, with additional funding from the Big Lottery Fund and DDC. It is anticipated this will be completed by the end of summer. Youngsters in Sandwich were also given a boost earlier this year with new play equipment funded by DDC at the Butts.
Cllr Nigel Collor, Cabinet Member for Access and Property Management, said: “These exciting new inclusive facilities for Dover and Walmer will provide a great space for children to play, and are an important part of our ongoing commitment to improve strategic sites across the area, in keeping with the District Play Strategy.”
Cllr Mrs Sue Nicholas, Cabinet Member for Community, said: “We continue to work hard to provide modern play facilities for the district, and are very pleased to see these major new play areas being developed for the future of our communities.”

Apples from cigarette smuggling plot to
benefit local wild animal parks.
Officers from the newly formed UK Border Agency (UKBA) have donated 11 pallets of apples to the Howletts and Port Lympne Wild Animal Parks which had been used in an attempt to camouflage a major cigarette smuggling plot.
Officers seized a staggering 4.6 million cigarettes on, Tuesday, 8 April 2008, which they discovered hidden behind the consignment of apples in a lorry that had arrived at the docks in Dover.
The lorry had arrived on a ferry from Belgium via Calais and the consignment was destined for an address in East Kilbride, Scotland. The cigarettes all branded Goldmans were packed in 15 pallets neatly placed behind the pallets of Gala apples. If undetected by officers the loss to the public purse is estimated at around £750,000, money that could be used to fund vital public services.
Following the detection, the case was passed to HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) investigation officers to continue enquiries. The driver of the vehicle, a 28 year-old man from Northern Ireland, was interviewed and later released on bail until 11 June 2008. Enquiries are continuing.
Carole Upshall, Regional Director South of UKBA said:“This is an excellent result and an example of good joint working by the team. We will continue to work with our partners in HMRC to tackle the smugglers who attempt to bring goods illegally into the UK. Smugglers are criminals who are only out to make a profit; they do not care about the harm that they cause by smuggling whether its drugs, dangerous counterfeit cigarettes or illegal immigrants”
Bob Gaiger, HM Revenue & Customs spokesman in the South East said:
“We are delighted to donate these apples to the animals at Howletts and Port Lympne Wild Animal Parks. Hopefully this will prove a valuable resource for the zoo and greatly helps us dispose of these perishable goods in a way that supports the environment. HMRC together with the newly formed UK Border Agency play a vital role in the fight to prevent cigarettes being smuggled into the UK and in protecting our communities from the violence and corruption that always accompany this illegal trade. Anyone with information about activity they suspect may be linked to drugs or tobacco smuggling should call our 24 hour confidential line 0800 59 5000."

Hi Sue,
Can I just say that I think you're a fantastic councillor. Like always, there are those who will knock you, usually those who would never dream of getting off their backsides to do anything for anyone. I think what you and Nigel have achieved over the proposed play parks is excellent and like Anne I look forward to taking my grandchildren there. Keep up your good work Sue, for every one person that criticises you there are loads of us that appreciate you too. Keep up your good work, but don't overdo it! We all need to put our feet up sometimes.

Ok George from Sandgate.I enjoy beeing a councillor and have been for 21 years. You missed the point completly.I dont mind running around and use buses to save council tax payers money .What I do object to is sniddy comments from people who have no idea what is going on and making personal comments.People who ring up any time day or night.Even people who work in shops or in banks have time off..
Sorry but you are off the wave lenght.Hence councillors donot comment on here very often as we know our message is misunderstood.

Yes Paul I was rather surprised no comments received First of all we councillors do get paid an allowance. so we have to take the flack On that Monday somewhat cold ,I caught the bus into Pencester met up with Nigel and Officers then over to Marke Wood Walmer.I then went back by car to Whitfield eating sandwiches on the way for a 12.30pm meeting .I left Whitfield by bus mid afternoon. On Wednesday I was at the St Georges Day event like most people I got very wet. After that I went by bus up to Whitfield for a 2 .00pm meeting and finally got home at 5 40pm,having left home before 10.00am.The Play area saga has dragged on and on.Yesterday was Crabble CornMill and today Age Concern. It is a full time job.
A job you get paid to do. If you do not want to run around doing this and that councillor, maybe you should not put yourself forward for election

I was a tad surprised nobody left a positive comment about the efforts being made by our sterling DDC Councillors on the play areas. At the end of the day these guys and gals are just like you and me and a word or two of encouragement wouldnt hurt. These new areas will be really good when completed and many kids will enjoy them.
Remember anyone at all can leave a Comment on these Comment pages, you dont have to be a member or anything. Its open to all.
There is of course a 'thread' running in the Letters Club on this topic called Pencester Gardens.

Good on ya wife is what I say Marek. A woman after my own heart there.
If Natascha does not make it onto the court, you will be free to leave straight afterwards if you wish. However if she does get on then she would have to stay until the end.
My advice would be to let her have a little lie in either way. You will need to arrive at around 2.15pm as rosebud selection starts at around 2.45 with parent/contestant briefing.

Good photo Paulb.
There are more councillors and others at the play area then workmen.Last time I passed there were 2 lads...lol..Well done all.I will take Natascha along when it's completed.
The old saying ''out of the mouths of babes..'' as Natascha and I were passing the playground yesterday teatime. She said ''Oh look Daddy they are doing something in the park'' ''Yes ''I replied
''Are they moving it from next to there?'' she asked pointing at the skateboard arena.
''No sorry'' I retorted.
And who said kids don't notice whats going on around them.
Maybe Councillors should listen more to the users and the young instead of district planners.

Thanks for your words of encouragement.
Is it obligatory that I have to buy my wife a new outfit for the evening...she said it was in the DCAL rules...lol
Only one area of concern is that as Natascha has to be at school the following day will she have to stay at the Town Hall til 10.30 if so I will make sure she has a long lie in Sunday am.
Be seeing you..

Thanks for all the comments guys. The Ramada really have come up trumps for DCAL.
Marek please do not worry about Sunday. We have one hell of a competition lined up, which should make for a wonderful afternoon/evening, as well as welcoming for the VERY FIRST TIME in Dover, Carnival friends from Corby in warwickshire. The current Miss European, and also the Kent Queen will also be there.
Hopefully we will get chance to have a chat, but as you can imagine, I am going to be a bit busy, but I am sure you will all have a wonderful time.
