It looks like Keith has gone AWOL for the moment Max. What's this fascination with our man Keef..its true he used to stride his territory with sweeping dignity, a true man of the people, when a multi councillor, but now he is just like you and me, part of the proletarian workforce...sigh!
Perhaps we need him to return to the council chamber.

Yes, as 'any fule kno' the statue in Calais is a Rodin. Under French law one is allowed up to 12 castings of a statue so there are a number of copies of the figures literally all over the world (although with different groupings of the figures).
For those who wish to see a copy without visiting our cheese eating surrender monkey neighbours there is a copy in Victoria Towers Gardens just west of the Houses of Parliament.

Yes indeed Max this is Big Bang Day from CERN in Switzerland. These science bods are up to re-creating the universe or some such hairbrained thing. Oddly I had never heard of CERN in Geneva until my brainbox daughter Briony said she wanted to go there this very summer...where!!?? sez I..whatzat??
Anyway go we did and off she went to CERN while I dappled my toes in the lapping blue lake of Geneva..and now she wants to go back again..oh dear the expense!!arrrgh!
This event today is getting lots of coverage this morning on Radio 4 and it is good to see European science steel its way back to the top again like it used to be once upon a time...top slot having been wrestled away by the Americans in recent times. The world is watching, some people are raising concerns that these scientists might intervere with some sort of natural balance by doing such experiments but hopefully all will be well.

Howards thanks for that info..sad to hear that the saver of so many lives died himself soon after. Yes a memorial to a military man who saved lives must be a rarity.
The statue we talk about is just to the left of the lookout platform ( looking from France) and at the cliff edge.

Unfortunately Sid we gain one statue but are due shortly to lose another one...our seafront Miner. It will be a sad loss from the seafront and will leave an unfillable hole as its very popular.
The ceremony and service for the new statue the other day was truly memorable and a special day for Dover and its older citizens, particularly those who remember the war first hand, and indeed for everyone else who attended.

brian and paul.
i had never heard of mr ramsey until i moved here and visited the castle for the first time.
he is certainly not a household name, why???
my understanding that he was dragged back into action, when the invasion went t*ts up.
that must be one of the most incredible life saving operations of all time.
the tragedy then, was that he died soon after, in an air accident.
we have enough statues of military people that took lives, but only one, that i know of, that saved so many allied lives.

I too agree with Dover getting more commemorative statues, and talking of which, how is the statue commemorating the death of the town centre coming along. Oh, sorry, you all might know it as ASDA. Has an opening date been announced yet?
I hear the shop at the top is already displaying it's Christmas wares. Time that practice ws stopped methinks.

Many thanks Brian for that as I often wondered who it was standing proudly at the clifftop..
thanks also to Howard there for confirming the statue in Calais is indeed a Rodin. No wonder its fantastic! Rodin was a master. Was in Calais recently and didnt bother to go up that far but am sorry now...should've had another look.

Paul, the statue that you can see at the castle is that of Vice-Admiral Ramsey who masterminded the Dunkirk evacuation in 1940. His headquarters were in the tunnels below the castle near where the statue stands.

Yes thats a good idea Marek re Churchill looking towards France...sounds great in fact. There is a statue of a soldier up there looking towards France. In the winter when the bushes are thinner I can see it from one of my windows but have never seen it up close so dont know what or who it is. Looks a smallish one. Sad to say have only ever been up at the Castle once since I came to live here.
In Parliament Square in London there is a controversial statue of Churchill. I remember when it was unveiled and it caused quite a holy stink, as many didnt like the way it depicted him as a crumpled figure. Lady Churchill, also around the same time, tore up a rather important newly commissioned painting of the man too.

I would like to see a statue of Churchill placed at the lookout point below Dover Castle staring over to France. What an evocative piece that would be.
