I think the idea of more commemorative statues or artwork is great! I am just back from accompanying my Mother home to Ireland after she had a short break here and we did a bit of the tourist thing - the Battle Of Britain memorial at Capel is so moving, we loved it. It's impossible not to be moved when looking at all those poor fellas names and thinking of their families. It is so important to keep the memory alive and to respect the memory of all the people who lived through that time. We should have more freely accessible historical information and interest: like statues and artworks! They would have the additional benefit of stimulating interest and therefore visits.

Janet a good suggestion as the weight and substance a noble statue adds to any location at all is very good indeed. There are great statues of course in London and have you seen the fantastic one in Calais..if memory serves me well it is of the Town Burghers and is outside the equally splendid Hotel de Ville. It may be a Rodin or am I barking mad with that one!?
The only downside to all this of course is cost. The new statue/ memorial on the seafront cost £46,000 and it took a long time to raise the cash for that..where would the money come from for all the others. However its a nice dream and maybe one day...
Delighted to say people are still popping down to visit it and yesterday I saw one elderly lady wipe a tear.

Wonderful pictures of the new statue. Does anyone think we could do with a few more? They could become a major feature for Dover. The Airman at Capel is truly wonderful but does not get seen by many people. How about a feature statue on each roundabout . Soldier,Sailor,Airman.Landarmy etc.
They could be very popular. I love the statues in London as well. Very useful when walking around so one does not get lost. Captain Scott,Florence Nightingale,Eros etc.
I feel sure that visitors to Dover would enjoy Statues with perhaps a Wartime theme to help them find their way around. How about a group of evacuees near the Priory Station ?

Im surprised no one has made comments on todays event .I saw a glimpse on the news at 6.00pm but very short .I thought some of our regulars would have said something??It was a lovely service sad that it came on to rain at the end and I think a few people were understandbly wet and cold .I think Winston Churchill needs a better researcher I did not know Dover had become a city or we had a corporation.

Howard
I'm afraid I don't share that latest view.
There has to be a\ line where you say hey thats to personal.
Wot we have had is a bit of fun in dubris, which is all well and good, but then it became like a personal smear campaign on some individuals.
If you look at this from the angle of say the SUN newspaper then fair enough(i suppose)that sells national papers.
But here we are talking about local community papers and I think one of papers did itself little justice when it went over the tiop on mounting such articles.
Even taking away the rights and wrongs of this, If I were a person who was thinking as a very new up and coming standing and keen and saw some of those articles I would think twice about putting my name forward.
Let's be honest even politicians are human? but tryting to get people to stand for councils against this is hard.
IU don't share the view that because someone has put themselves up for LOCAL office that they should be able to have the pee taken out of them, but I suppose it will go on, am i glad im out of it

Hello
I think i have been here before.
When iv spoken to Sue and\Nigel and Roger about the continued cllr bashing they told me (when they were in opposition) well as elected members you have to expect it.
No sooner had our Nigel/Sue got elected than they were saying they were not happy at being attacked(never agreed with me when they were in opposition) so to me more so NIGEL it stinks of double standards.
Iv always been of the opinion that every cllr should be accountable, but what went on a few years back got into personal attacks just because someone had blinkered vision.
Im for open debate, but allowing everyone to have there say and not to be attacked for saying it.
but im just a little pleb in this big wide world

I agree with you Howard, some councillors do not like being in the firing line, it is almost as though we are not supposed to question or criticise them because they are always right and the poor old electorate is a moron.
My particular posting was addressed in regard to the body corporate not the individual, I am well aware that there are good and bad councillors as there are good and bad in all walks of life.
I make no apology for the deliberate way in which I worded the posting I wanted solely to provoke a debate on what has been accomplished since the end of the second world war.
Barry I think may know me and knows that I am not afraid to voice my opinion, his reply was robust but I took absolutely no offence whatsoever, i n fact that was his view and I respect him for it.

With you PaulB, but I have to say that I don't recall noticing that any councillors were being unfairly targeted: they are elected members and accountable, and if treated/challenged without rancour then they really should do their job and respond! This forum is an excellent place to network and reach out and canny counsillors will recognise that.

surely councillors and any other politicians should be treated the same as everyone else.
if i stated that i was the messiah, just arrived, then i would have to accept
that some posters might doubt the truth in what i say.
no-one has to make claims about themself, but if they do, then scrutiny will occur.

Im fully in agreement Bern with you there...if we chase posters away then whats the point. I have had a chat or two with BarryW about this before, about the modicum of restraint needed. BarryW is very passionate about his views and of course is one of our tip top posters. But the same applies to everyone.
If for example the councillors are forever getting a kicking then they will simply not engage or post anymore...I suspect we have lost Nigel for this very reason. I still meet Nigel for a jar or two occasionally...but if people are insulted continually then they wont come back.
Its not an elected council chamber Doverforum, but an entertainment, so its worthwhile remembering that.
We might kill the thing we love.

You are right Barry. I think I should record this moment.......
Absolutely, we should all be open to challenge, I guess I am just aware of the people who might be scared off if challenged too robustly, but who have something to say and a need to be heard. I can take a challenge
and a bit of an exchange of verbal blows, as I assume you and others in "positions" can, but there are some timid people, some with learning disabilities, some vulnerable or frail, some simply mild and retiring, who might be put off, and I wouldn't want to miss their views. It would be a loss.

Bern. Probably to the same extent as you judging from some of the exchanges you have been involved in recently!
Perhaps you just think its OK to have a go at public figures but not the other way round... Fair opinion if that is so, I just dont agree with it, anyone who says something is open to challenge, robustly or not, however is appropriate.
