Well there we are...Ive reined the headline in a smidgen but made the letters bigger to balance things out... lol!... so hopefully all sides happy now.
But seriously though it is all more than a tad disappointing and this latest news is equally disappointing. I was in the audience that night last november when Cameron made that speech of hope. He launched Roger as the new Business Support Manager and illustrated a plan of action that impressed the audience no end. It all looked very good, very hopeful. The speech can still be found Page 8 of our ALL RECENT FEATURES( in fact there are 2 features on the evening there). The new line up of the Chamber executives was impressive too.
Was chatting afterwards with the guys in the audience that evening and the response was thus
" at last we seem to have something in place thats going to make a real difference"
Sadly now most of the personnel from the evening in question have dispersed.

dover forum is a magazine so any new features on the front page have to be embellished to catch public gaze.
we are a small town so any new story has to be "stretched" to its full worth.
a quick look at the news stands in smiths proves that people like a headline.

That is a rather dramatic headline PaulB from something fairly straightforward and quite above board.
Alan has been a valued and highly professional member of the Board and his insight, experience and expertese will not easily be replaced. Nevertheless we still have a strong Board of prominent and experienced people.
Good to see that Alan is participating on the forum so his insights will be shared by a wider range of people in future.
This is my opportunity as well to publicly thank Alan for all that he has done for the Board and for Dover and to wish him well and for great success in the future in both his personal and business life.

Hello Mr Shirley, I've been to Australia, Adelaide. Lovely city and suburbs! You state that you envisage vigorous and energetic debate on the Forum. Here is one good topic worth debating: the introduction of port-tolls in all British ports - which would include Dover - and the sharing of these revenues among national Treasury, Council, District and Town Councils.
If achieved, and providing the port-toll were a sufficient and fair sum, Dover's Councils would not need any Government grant to fund their budgets, and would still have a lot more money at disposal than is now the case! The same would aply to all Councils in Britain with a commercial port.
It would be something like motorway and tunnel tolls in most European countries, which we do not have in Britain. Hence no-one in Europe would complain, as it would be fair.

As you can see in the posts on the members page I did bring Lord Pearson to Dover and he did meet the C/C in the TOWN hall,I have never thank them for turning up that morning so will do it now.It was good for them to meet up with him so Mr Shirley thank you and the C/C for that.We need the C/C but it does need more support and funding both from the Town and DDC +more members , I would like to join myself but I do not have a business so I would not be much good to them.

Well, I am not sure that this news is worthy of a front page entry but that is for others to decide.
My contribution to the Chamber allowed me to meet some high calibre individuals on the Board and I regret that I cannot continue in that role. The Chamber is and should remain a driving force for change in this area as commercial acumen is often a shortfall in public life.
Falling on swords does not apply at all to my departure by the way Paul, but I recognise your enthusiasm for poetic license.
Quite rightly, the Chamber took a collective decision to refrain from making public comment regarding events of the last 4 or 5 months whilst others felt inclined to make public comment, often inaccurately. However, I will be correcting the public record as a private individual in the near future.
My interest and support for Dover is undiminished despite my business demands elsewhere. I anticipate vigorous and energetic debate on the Forum in the future but will never be drawn into a street fight. Integrity and honesty are in abundance at the Chamber and although I no longer represent that body, any comments I make will be on the same foundation.

Was a real pleasure to meet such a down to earth lady and a brave one at that, had a lengthy chat and laugh that she had taken the long way round across the Channel.
So good luck to her for all she is doing towards the Huntingtons Disease Association.

Yes a great day yesterday at the Regatta. It was good to meet everyone down there and Victoria enjoyed helping out at one of the stands. The photo of David and Kay is lovely Ian - thanks for that. Won't be down at the seafront today as the Hannent clan are getting together with David and Kay at the helm.

Great day at the Regatta today despite the weather - well done to all involved - the firework display was I believe the best yet for the Regatta so well done to the organisers for putting on such a great show - particularly like the use of the water fireworks which reflected beautifully on the calm sea.

Ah! Thanks Ian, Just as I thought, you got a better photo than mine! David's sister's name is Kay Hersov and she is a delightful lady. Have just got back from a trip to Le Touquet so I was pleased to make it to the Regatta today. Was great to see so many forumites enjoying themselves. It was buzzing down there with lots of very interesting stalls.

SAIPEM 7000 It's going to the "castor" field in Columbia i believe. Holds the record for the vessel with the deepest draught and the biggest single lift. My back of the fag packet calculation says that it could lift in one go 200,000 people or about 7 times the population of Dover.
I was on P&O Calais to Dover and crossed just aft of it on Thursday.

It is the way some people go on talking down Dover .Time to talk up our wonderful District .Wherever you go there is bound to be certain areas that need a lick of paint .Dover District is made up of many rural areas ,three towns Deal,Sandwich and Dover Dont forget Aylesham .Some parts of Aylesham are very good .Denton Shepherdswell,Wingham etc .
Not all rotten apples .I saw the chap yesterday who threw his bus ticket on the floor .I will not forget his face .People like him throwing litter makes me sick .The other day I was in Dover quite early not a piece of litter to be seen .I bet by mid day it was a different story .
