Keith,

I apologise for my comments. Having been out of the circuit for a while I was not aware of all the facts. I now know why you said what you did and understand fully. I wasn't interfering, just giving my opinion (something you are hot on!)but I do accept that I was wrong. Friends again? ;-)

Vic - sorry love - no fighting, just a mistake on my part - all friends again now I hope.

Thank you both Jacqui and Keith.

I understand that any potentially libellous comments made by me have been removed from the Forum some time ago.

I am conscious of what I post and have never intended anything to be libellous; if I have accidentally made any libellous statements - about anyone, then I unconditionally apologise.

Jacqui v Keith, I AM KEEPING OUT OF THIS ONE.

  keith, Dover:
Lovely Jacqui

Although you have CHOSEN to INTERFERE I'm happy to explain

Roger and I have worked closely together in the past, and although Roger may feel he has said nothing in a libel way, solicitors are paid to find holes, and theres no doubt from the postings that Roger has an axe to grind.

Take it from me, having worked closely with Roger It was helpful advice which Roger can decide to Ignore if thats his wish.

please don't try to find issues with things that are not there
Just trying to help Roger and advise
its a matter of take it or leave it advice.

Roger I'm sure is big enough to speak for himself,
and make his own mind up if to take advice or not

  Jacqui, Dover:
A couple of years ago we went to Pollensa on Majorca. There was a beautiful market Square there, surrounded by cafes and bars. During the day people sat there for a coffee or a light lunch in a wonderful atmosphere. In the evening and into the small hours it was always busy with people dining or just enjoying a drink. Music was playing in the background and we never once saw any trouble there. Nearby was a taxi rank so there was no need to drive if you wanted to drink. It was a magical place to be where all nations mingled together happily. I have often thought that with the right planning our square could be very similar.I'm sure there are places not dissimilar to Pollensa in this country, so why not in Dover?
With regard to Rogers comments, he is a very intelligent and wise man who would not publish anything that was libelous so may I (humbly) suggest that he does not need the advice of an ex councillor before saying what he wants to say.
Oh yes - doesn't the sea front look lovely? First time I've been down for a while and was very pleasantly surprised.

ROGER
I do agree with your latest posting on C.O.C. but reading a dictionary is not thre same as a solicitor looking for blood!!!
So I would humbly suggest you let this go.

On the market square screen/cafe the tables have been outside dickens etc for some time and I have used them, but never witnessed problems, and certainly a welcome stopping point for many and meeting place, sad realy that some business's are trying to make the effort.

  sue , River:
There are tables and chairs outside of Dickens ,Bar Elle and round the corner in Church StreeT .I donot find it very attractive stumbling over chaps with glasses of Larger in their hands at 9.00 am in the morning
The same can be said of Canterbury where the masses sit outside of Makdonalds .

Perhaps if our shops were to be decorated with bunting and more live entertainment in the street .
Market Square has been ruined with the presence of the large screen and a boarded up fountain .When busses used to travel throught the Square it was much better .

Yes I mention the continental approach in the copy above...I should have flagged it up more but will reproduce it here now as the page above will be changing shortly...

"These events in Market Square wont take off because the basic ingredients for a good and pleasant time are not in place. There are no tables, no chairs, no umbrellas keeping the burning sun off our furrowed brows, no drinks, no food...this is NOT the way our continental friends do it, look at their squares...packed! Why are we not to be trusted with our Camparis and our chilled Chardonnays on a summer's day in Market Sq? Are we the beating savage breast/beast of humanity while our continental friends are oh so sophisticated in comparison? PB."

I was on a roll there....lol!

  Roger, Dover:
Thanks Keith - I agree that "least said soonest mended" is usually best and I have been very careful not to say anything that is not true.

In the dictionary and I'm sure in law, it states "a published false statement damaging to a person's reputation". In other words, telling lies about someone.
I do not think I have published lies about anyone.

Colin - I agree the Market Square should be like an Italian, French or Spanish Piazza, where people can eat and drink at their leisure.

I don't think the general public would allow it to turn into a haven for drunks.
Careful licensing and careful policing would allow and encourage a great cafe culture, where sensible people really enjoy relaxing and watching the world go by.

Most things seem to get spoilt by the few, so the many have to go without.

Turning the Market Square as described above was just a part of my many initiatives as Dover Business Support Manager.

Because I am not involved anymore and because the DBS Manager's role has been downgraded to a part-time one, I have no idea how anything worthwhile can emanate from that role now.

As soon as I hit the Market Square Howard, so does the sound of a loud tv. Nothing wrong with trying to promote things locally on there, but why do they have news flowing along underneath? As Iv`e said before on here, do tourist`s really want to come and listen about Afghanistan, Iraq, etc? The Market Square is a wonderful place for conversation`s, turn the tv off and open a cafe`s round it with a continental flavour as someone mentioned on here last year. We`ll have to meet down there for a chat sometime Howard, would be an interesting conversation mate.

26 July 2010 at 10:52 pm

  howardmcsweeney, Dover:
there seems to be no sound colin.

i rather like the constant promotions of events in our district.

market square is not the place for quiet conversations, never has been in the past.

26 July 2010 at 10:40 pm

  colin, Dover:
Apparently Howard, the BBC actually have alot to do with it. They provide the content and manage the screen from what I`ve found out. In other words, they decide what goes on there. I wonder how much they charge for all that?

26 July 2010 at 10:39 pm

  colin, Dover:
Then why should the BBC be allowed to keep filling people`s head`s with all their depressing news report`s Howard? I think it` breathe`s death into the Market Square with all those news report`s. I like to sit and talk, but I don`t want the distraction of someone rambling on about some repetitive news items while I`m trying to have a conversation with someone. Put it somewhere else.

26 July 2010 at 10:26 pm

  howardmcsweeney, Dover:
colin
the big screen is financed by the olympic committee nothing to do with the bbc.

personally i find that the screen breathes a little life into market square.

26 July 2010 at 9:59 pm

  colin, Dover:
Regarding the films being shown on the big screen the weekend, whatever they are, I`m sure that the most die hard tv addict wouldn`t want to spend a day out watching tv, when they could watch it at home. The big screen was a big mistake, and it just goes to show how the BBC is wasting that licence money. I wonder how Dovorian`s will feel next time the BBC want`s to up the license fee? I say again, make the Market Square a more sociable place for visitor`s to sit down, eat, drink and talk, rather than having 24 hour news blaring in their ears.

In light of the libel claims, I will be careful on my comments;

ROGER
Clearly from the photio/comments, your very own barryw and all the board are fully behind the C.O.C.
Looks like you a lone voice on this one Roger. Barryw has not
only agreed he's very much saiod your wrong ROGER and
Mr Mcsweeney has his !00% support.

On the chamber itself, I feel this press release took to long and
should have been released some time ago, sadly now they will never be believed.

We can only judge the C.O.C on results and although they don't look good on that front, I hope all this untidy mess can be sorted out very soon.

ROGER
I don't know who the libel action is against whether it's the paper or yourself, but as A friend could I humbly suggest you be careful whsat you say in reference to the C.O.C.

I don't know if I'm stepping out of the conservative line on the
C.O.C. and the present situation.

It's my view that the chamber needs a new board.

  sue nicholas, River :
Im not going to waste my breath on posting about the screen .I regret very much that Connaught Park is not hosting the film event this year .It was always well supported .I recall when two of our young officers approached me with the idea of showing a film FREE for the residents .The idea was talked over with the Leader I was present at the meeting .In my role at that time as Community I embraced this idea and fully supported the officers who worked hard to make it a success .It makes me sad to see that something that worked has been writen off.
I maybe one of the oldies on the council but I have a very young mind .

  Roger, Dover:
As many people have said; losing 6 companies does not a good Director of Business Development, or a President, make.

There are vast amounts of other people's money lost already, is that not enough ?
Then there are the share changes in his current company.

I hope the above words are just for "public consumption" and don't actually reflect the true feelings of the Directors of the Chamber of Commerce.

Whether it turns out to be fraudulent or illegal, surely the facts speak for themselves ?

The Dover Express would not have run this story if they thought there was any libel - you can't be sued for libel, if what you are saying is true - Companies House don't make mistakes, they just record what has happened - what's been sent to them.

i left about 11.15 am.

incidentally, just noticed in that picture of cameron and barry, the latter has a smug look that suggests he has just seen gordon brown tread in some dog muck.

Jono

You are obviously in the MacSween camp and know nothing of what he has really done.

I have done my own investigations on him, following many local business-men's advice and it is all there on the Companies House webv-site - their records tell it all.

Kathy at the Dover Express has done her own investigations, she didn't need mine; what he has done over a number of years would lead one to think he should not be President of the Chamber of Commerce , or the Director of Business Development.

Look on Companies House web-site, you'll find it all there.

No lies, no libel, just facts.

And now, as they say, for something completely different....yet more things to do in Dover this weekend, stuff to suit all tastes now showing in the editorial above...with the added inclusion of the delish Marilyn Munroe. Well I had to jazz up the DDC press releases somehow !lol

to only slightly misquote Oscar Wilde "Once is unfortunate, twice is careless, six times suggests you may not be a glowing example of how to run a business" and I might opine makes one a rather poor candidate to lead a Chamber of Commerce

Roger its not always possible to go any stronger, there are legal contraints on all these things and Im sure the article in question was run through the lawyers before seeing the light of day.

totally lost me jono.

where does dover district council enter the equation?

23 July 2010 at 6:19 pm

  Jono, Dover:
Obviously a "witch hunt" by his bitter and twisted ex-wife together with a disgruntled sacked ex DDC member.....
WHAT has this matter involving shares in my macsween's companies got anything at all to do with the DDC ????
why reck all the voluntary work done just for a badly informed sensationalised story ?
i hope your "in the gutter" rag will print a humble apology when this matters is cleared up in cameron's favour.
