December 2009 : Mike Webb is a very well known and popular figure here in Dover. He has in recent times held two very high profile positions in the town, the first being Dover Town Centre Manager, which he held for a number of years, in fact from 1999 to 2005, and he followed on from this by taking up the equally significant role as Town Clerk at Dover Town Council…this is a role he fulfils currently.
In his days as Town Centre Manager , Mike showed great skill at holding the business community together. Many businesses joined the scheme, including ourselves here at Doverforum, and the whole concept motored along quite well, but to some extent was always hampered by a lack of solid funding. Sadly TCM was burdened by the need to raise most of its own finances, which of course would have hampered its daily effectiveness to a degree. Despite that particular handicap a great many advancements were achieved on behalf of local business.
After Mike’s departure from this role, an effort was made to keep the TCM concept alive but it was difficult to replace such an effective persona as Mike Webb's, and the efforts to keep it running did not turn out to be successful. Even though by this time Mike was enjoying his new role, he was nevertheless was very sad to see the decline of TCM. Since then Dover has existed without any co-ordinating business body at the core of things, although very recently the Chamber of Commerce has begun a new initiative with the Dover Business Support Manager idea(Roger Walkden), an idea which has been received well.
Mike was born in Dover but left the town to attend University, and from that time on he travelled widely to more than 50 countries and over the years accumulated considerable business experience along the way, having at one time ran his own international business which endured for more than 20 years. He was then involved in training personnel for the likes of Eurotunnel , Seafrance and Hoverspeed and spent 5 years living in France doing just that. Mike returned to Dover, was married to Carole by then, and raised kids here in the town because as Mike says… “ Dover is a great place to bring up kids!”
In no time at all Mike then found himself in the Town Centre Manager job which brings us full circle. Now he enjoys the somewhat quieter role as Town Clerk but is just as effective.
“Town Clerk is a very different job“ says Mike,” largely out of the public eye. I am the ‘proper officer’ which means that I and my staff advise the Council but do not make policy or get involved in politics. It is my legal duty to carry out the democratic will of the Council.” Long may he continue.

Doverforum has built up a considerable archive of pictures over the years. I think we have been operational now for about 10 or so years. In the beginning we did not cover any editorial events, but as things developed we began to embrace the sights and sounds around us and began our features. We have quite a picture collection of all the people that matter, all the movers and shakers. The plan for this page is to do a kind of who's who of all the people that make, or perhaps more appropriately have made, Dover move forward. It will be a sporadic scrapbook from the archives, not in any kind of date order. I will add to it one piece at a time..if you think you should be on this page let me know.

November 2009: Sue Nicholas is one of Dover’s great characters and one of our leading councillors. She is an extremely independent minded woman and this great streak of refreshing independence, although popular with the Conservative voters in River, recently lost her the previously secure Housing cabinet position on Dover District Council. Sue was unwilling or unable to play the party game over such innovations as the gigantic screen in Market Sq. Sue did not like it and said so in no uncertain terms. She didn’t like its location either. This maverick approach was not the position required by her colleagues and she was immediately shown the proverbial swinging door.
“ I was extremely disappointed ,in fact hurt, that I was removed from the cabinet .I always brought challenge to the meetings if I thought it appropriate .I have never courted favour and I really loved the job I was doing which brought me into contact with so many residents all over the District.”
Although Sue is a battle hardened Councillor of the old school ,this setback nevertheless hurt her deeply, as you can see from the quote above. After all her belief , often expressed previously, is that any councillor should speak their mind and put forward the various opinions held in the District even though these opinions may at the time be somewhat unpalatable to the 'management'. Her opinion with regard to the Market Sq screen was held my many.
But her Conservative colleagues appeared to have regarded her as too much of a loose canon, or so the rumour mill suggested anyway. To them she appeared unwilling to play the game, to put on the usual unified front, often seen in council or indeed government circles, which is particularly demanded in times of crises.
Although Sue is one of Dover’s favourite characters she is not actually from the town, but hails from a sleepy hamlet in northern Essex. So yes that’s right…an Essex girl! When her husband got a job with Seaspeed here in Dover in 1970, Sue joined him soon after, and in no time at all was involved in community work. She was elected to the council in 1987 and by the year 2000 was a full cabinet member.
Although she has had some setbacks this year there is still plenty of fire and brimstone in our Sue. I say “our” Sue as she is an avid and very welcome contributor to Doverforum. One of those few sturdy councillors willing to stick their heads above the parapet and communicate with the people who put them there.
Picture above shows left to right Cllr Roger Walkden, Cllr Sue Nicholas, Cllr Roger Frayne.

August: Ian Lillford is one of those rare guys who is packed to the very brim with community spirit. He will help out no matter what. He gets down and does it. Although Ian loves Dover and its community, he is not from here at all, but from that far off township of Hull, yes that one in Yorkshire, way ooop north! But it was Hull's loss and Dover's gain when Ian decided to settle here.
But how did he end up in Dover? Well the army brought him here many moons ago. He was with the Prince of Wales's Own Regiment and they/he came to stay at the sadly now deserted Connaught Barracks. While at Connaught Barracks he met a lovely local girl and in the full glow of romance, decided he liked the place more than he expected. He stayed in the army for six years and after that worked, as many do, down in the docks, all the while raising a family. He is currently with the local Girls Grammar School, another fine institution. Ian has been here in Dover now for 32 years and is still loving it.
One cannot talk about Ian Lillford without mentioning the river. The local River Dour to be precise. Ian passionately rallied up a group of volunteers several years ago, all mustered from this very website Doverforum, and their spirited remit was to try and knock the river back into shape. Ian wanted people to respect this natural resource. He was saddened to see abandoned bicycles, bedsteads, and the like, just chucked in there and left to rot. He was also upset to see people fishing out of season, destroying the delicate natural balance. Working with the community he decided to try and do something about it himself, as he felt very let down by official channels. Did he make any progress? well that's a big and very long topic. Initially Ian did make considerable progress, and was much lauded in the press for his positive action, but officialdom eventually got itself in gear and took over, promising a more positive approach to the river, but... not to everyone's liking alas! no, not to everyone's liking. The story of the river will run and run...

Mandie did not have any grand plans to take over and run DCAL, but found it thrust upon her when a number of previous management personnel were unable to continue with it for a variety of reasons. As they say…some are born great and some have greatness thrust upon them. Mandie did not want to let the operation just fade away, so grabbed the reins with gusto. Former director Sid Perkins is nowadays abroad, but still has a role as Honorary President, but the day to day hard graft and enterprise is all down to Mandie Sehmbi.

The picture above was taken on Remembrance Sunday 2008 and of course features the current DDC Chairman Cllr Bernard Butcher and his lady wife Margaret. Bernard is a popular figure with a huge and illustrious list of credits to his name and many of you will have seen him at the various functions around the district where he is the figurehead representative of Dover District Council. Doverforum has photographed Bernard everywhere from the various celebrations at Pencester Park, to further functional days at Connaught Park, to the Olympic Flag /Flame arriving on Dover seafront and so on. However to represent Bernard in our Who's Who Hall of Fame we have chosen just a simple picture of himself and his wife at the Maison Dieu House.
And speaking of his illustrious career, his credits role of the tongue in fine style. Bernard has been a Conservative Councillor for 17 years. He was Mayor of Sandwich for three years, Deputy Mayor of Sandwich for a further three years, he was also Speaker of the Cinque Ports, and of course, as mentioned, is the current Chairman of Dover District Council. Rumour has it that he will be continuing in the role for a further year too. So to say that Bernard Butcher has served the community for most of his adult life would not be an understatement.

This photograph was taken comparatively recently, last november in fact, and shows our current Mayor Diane Smallwood in attendance at the official unveiling of the new statue along Dover seafront. That's Diane on the righthandside. As I write..April 2009, Diane's reign as Mayor is reaching its twilight and her eventful and successful year will soon be drawing to a close. The lady is very popular with almost everybody and that's not always easily achievable, but obviously a popular Mayor is halfway towards being a good one even before proceedings begin. The lady on the left is Jean Farrell who has been Diane's Mayoress and between them they have certainly cut an elegant dash at all events, as you can see from the picture above. Diane became a councillor with Dover Town Council in 1996 and with Dover District Council in 1997. She is still with both councils, so still serving the community. She has been Mayor 3 times, one time while Speaker of the Cinque Ports, and Deputy Mayor 3 times...and who knows she may even do it again one day.

This picture was taken in November 2007 during the Mayoral reign of Bob Markham, and shows Bob and former Mayor Jan Tranter outside St Mary's Church in central Dover. They paused briefly for the picture after the memorial service for Remembrance Sunday. We are featuring Jan Tranter on this occasion and will return to Bob at a later date. Jan is a very popular councillor. She has been serving the community for 8 years now, firstly as a councillor on the Dover Town Council, and very soon after joining DTC, became a councillor with the Dover District Council too. She remains to this day on both councils, working hard for the community. She was married to Ken Tranter and for a time they were quite the eye catching political duo. Ken became Mayor and Jan followed into the role immediately afterwards ( year 2006/2007). Sadly soon after all the mayoral high flying the marriage broke down. Ken withdrew from politics but Jan continued with both councils. Very recently Jan was selected as the incoming Deputy Mayor by her colleagues on Dover Town Council.

What is so important about getting a photo in here Vic. I would suggest you take the hint....after 3 or 4 posts, you still do not have a picture posted.....get the hint!! However, a photo may be good...I would like to see who is so vain they beg for their photo to be posted. You clearly rate yourself higher that anyone else does. This is who's who and clearly nobody wants to know who you are.....just an observation.

I just wanted to add my own support to Sue and her independence. There are many things Sue says with which I agree and many with which I disagree, but her ability to stick to her values and principles is admirable, even when I disagree!! Independent minds and clear values and principles are rare and valuable in todays political climate. It's all in the conversations and the debates!

Sue nice to see you up there on the who's who page and with such a good picture to go with the write up, which I must say gives a very good description of the sort of hard working councillor you have always been and still are.
We councillors don't always see eye to eye but I think and I hope you will agree we have always managed to get on with each other.

Have now added Sue to our 'hall of fame' as it were and a great subject she is too. Lots of character to play with there. Hopefully have got most of it right Sue, but if there are any clangers let me know. This section would clearly make a website on its own as it could cover much more ground. As I said before I havent been able to get back to it very often but now that Howard is onboard as Assoc Editor it frees me up a good bit and other things may be possible. So many thanks to Howard on that front and Sue in this case.
The picture of Sue has been used before, is well known and well liked, I had wanted to do another picture up in her River constituency but wasnt able to get round to it...at least so far.

Well just as we suspected..those members currently at the top of the page proved just how much they deserve to be in our Who's Who...they are such spirited members of the community. Mandie Sehmbi above organised a Dover Carnival (DCAL) walk from Dover to Brighton to raise money for Hayley Okines. They must be a darn sight fitter than yours truly is all I can say.
Ian as ever was on hand as workhorse to help throughout. As ever, always there to make things happen with a practical hands on approach.
The walk was completed and money was raised for a good cause.

Have added our very own Ian 'Croc' Lillford to the Who's Who above and a better candidate you cannot have. People with community spirits are rare as I said above and Ian has bags of it. Im still gobsmacked in awe at the memory of the way he assembled my own TV for me when it arrived as new. I assumed a TV would come ready to run with stand all assembled but nay nay thrice nay. It would still be lying on my floor in assorted sections had Ian not done the deed. It was one of those big silver jobs with stand, all terribly out of date now but how was I to know change was coming!!lol ?

Very Dissapointed, Docks (because they dont like people who wont:
I am writing about a local family firm (George Hammonds).
Three People retired from Hammonds this year who have worked for the company for over 120 years in the Stevedoring side of the company.
One went sick with cancer one month before he retired. The second one they expected him to carry on woking, and when we told the timekeeper and management that he was retiring they said they did`nt know it was his 65 birthday.
The third one his birthday was last Monday and they phoned him and asked him to come to work the next day.
My hang up about all of this that the company did not get them a retirment present but also they did not even say Thank you for their services for working for the firm for over 40 years apiece.

Well Done Karol with your latest film venture. I'm sure you made a very glamorous nurse! Will have to see that film, I was quite a fan of Ian Dury & the Blockheads in my day (loved 'Hit me with your rhythm stick, etc).
Very nice photo of Mr & Mrs B Butcher above.

Looking a lot less glamourous this time - my latest film role as the nurse who treats the young Ian Dury after he is struck down with polio in the Biopic 'Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll'.

The times changed since that picture was taken. My work with both DDC and DTC has kept me very busy and it has been hugely rewarding.
I'm looking forward to taking up the Deputy Mayor's duties this year. It is an important year for Dover as the town is taking on the Speakership of the Cinque Ports. There are many other events this year too.
I will have my critics I'm sure, but I guess these things happen.

Amusing post there before but couldnt leave it. If the person wants to contribute properly we would be only too happy to run with it.
Howard yes have some old pictures but did suffer a big loss of some valuable ones at one time when an old computer completely wrecked itself. But have some. This page will be a long term player, hopefully, and so I will get round to many more....its finding the time to get round to everything.

We did Colette, enough to build a snowman - which the kids got bored of so I actually made it myself lol. The kids are all great, there's 8 of us now including Mr Vamp & the new Kvamp. Svamp's in the forces :-( Bvamps studying for childcare and the other 3 are teaching the locals how down to earth Southerner's are!

Ah! that photo of Tracey and Sara is a blast from the past, Happy Days! It was one of our St Patricks night parties PaulB, and the place was decked out in the auld Irish colours with shamrocks aplenty, we had a great Hooley that night if I remember rightly, Hic, Hic. It was a shock to lose Sara, she was such an avid supporter of the Forum and is sorely missed. Good to hear from you Tracey, I bet you have had more than your share of snow up in Derbyshire, I hope the Dover 6 are well and enjoying their new home.

that is what we all want to hear colette.
the movers and shakers getting their heads together to see how we can all benefit.
3 port towns involved here, plenty of opportunities for trippers from all 3 to visit the others and boost the coffers.
at present more reason for the french to come here, but exchange rates can change very quickly.
