In the good old days our loved ones could enjoy/brave a sea breeze and go onto the POW Pier to wave us off.
They only did it the once though, complaining to us later that they couldn't see us on deck, even though we were waving frantically at them!
(Our lot are the seven figures lining the rails, to the left of the wall pillar looking from the ship, the dear old 'Saga Rose', en-route to the Baltic in 2006.)

Yes, the demise of Hengist was also reported in Ferry & Cruise Review this month. For more info and some wonderfully evocative old photographs, try googling hhvferry - a website built by an enthusiast of Hengist, Horsa and Vortigern. My last trip on one of them (and I can't for life of me remember which one) was in 2001 on a family island hopping holiday in Greece. We'd been stuck on Paros for 48 hours through high winds and were in danger of missing our flight home from Athens. At midnight the evening before our flight we were met with the welcome sight of an old BR stalwart rounding the headland and berthing to round up the refugees. Inside she still had much of the old signage and even UK three pin sockets in the lounges, so how they got greek hoovers to work on board is a mystery. And whilst we're on the subject of departures, I see you've temporarily lost the European Seaway, which has gone off to cover for refits on the Larne run.

The SEABOURNE QUEST sailed for Antwerp late Monday afternoon.

Remember the HENGIST ?
One of the stalwarts of the last years of the Folkestone/Boulogne service has finally reached the end of her long career.

French-built & entering service for British Rail in 1972 she spent most of her British-flagged career running out of Folkestone seeing out the Sealink era until the Stena took over Sealink in 1991 & almost immediately closing the route.

She was in the headlines in 1987 when she went aground at Folkestone during the great storm of 16th.October.
She was salvaged within a few days but had received considerable damage & did not re-enter service until the following January.

The HENGIST, by then the STENA HENGIST , left British waters as the Greek ROMILDA in March 1992 & spent the rest of her career in the Eastern Mediterranean under a variety of owners & names, finally finishing up as the PANAGIA TINOU for Ventouris Sea Lines who collapsed in 2015 & the ship was effectively abandoned under arrest in Piraeus in where she eventually partly capsized at her moorings in October 2016.

She was salvaged in March this year & was towed to Aliaga, in Turkey for demolition, the final destination of many cross-channel ferries, including, of course, the PRIDEs of DOVER & CALAIS.
She was beached on 23rd.March & the photo shows her soon after arrival before cutting up had started.

Her sister ship, the former HORSA. has been laid up in Greece for several years as the PENELOPE-A & her second sister, the SENLAC, who mostly ran Newhaven/Dieppe before heading for the Med in 1987 was broken up at Aliaga in 2010 as the APOLLON.

A much-loved ship on a route that was preferred by many travellers due to the convenient berth in Boulogne close to the centre of the town & handy for the motorway system [before Calais was connected likewise] & the lack of delays as there were usually only two ships on the service so there was no competition for the berths.

There was much less pressure than busy Dover & Folkestone was often referred-to by the Dover crews as ‘Sleepy Hollow’ - indeed occasionally night services would be cancelled due to lack of traffic.

I sailed on her many times - one cargo that we carried that was discouraged at Dover was the fish lorries, that often dripped smelly fishy drips onto the cardeck & we carried drums of industrial ‘perfume’ to kill the smell.

For more details of the HENGIST’s career & indeed for further detailed information on most of the local ferries & other visitors to this area I’d recommend a visit to the ‘Past & Present’ section of ‘Dover Ferry Photos’ where Nigel Thornton has done a lot of hard work.

Thanks are due to Nigel for permission to use photos from his collection & also to Selim San of Izmir who visits the Aliaga scrapyards almost every week.

Pictures above there of Balmoral from yesterday with the top shot showing her leaving for Bergen in Norway last night around 6PM. The second shot was taken in the early morning light .. during the blustery conditions. Have also added a little one of Saga Pearl II arriving the day before. She stayed two days and left last night also around 6PM heading for Rouen. Will have another pic or two of Saga Pearl in due course.

Sospan Dau and Kreeft also featured above there. It was very busy once again in the Exclusion Zone last night...we had multi-vessel action all with terrific blazing lights...MP40, both Waddens, MoragM, Kreeft, Sospan Dau...Causeway hasn't rejoined the fray yet.

Well done with those pix below Ed.
Thanks for the info as ever Vic.
Thanks to Ray too.

Cruise Visits:
Colette is a wee bit incapacitated at the moment, out of action, walking wounded...but she has asked me to mention that we have two cruise visits today
The Seabourn Quest
and the AIDAsol
she always adds more detail but I will leave it at that for now...she will be back later in the week with the next batch.
Heck of a busy cruise ship period as you can see.
Atlantic Reefer also in Port - must have come in during the wee small hours of the morning.

I'm particularly interested in the destinations that the cruise ships' passengers are offered for their shoreside excursions.
For many, it's a trip to London, for others a mixture of Canterbury, Leeds Castle, Hever Castle &c.
A destination which has recently become popular is to, of all places, Rye!
I hasten to add that I'm not denigrating Rye as the town is well-known to me because of past family hotel connections, but I don't think that there are that many attractions there.
Perhaps the excursions take in Winchelsea, as well as Camber Sands - it would be interesting to find out!

Thank you for the remarks sir but I was not the only one working thereSmiley Going back to our port, yes we are getting just a small drop in the number of calls by the cruise ships, but more next year, there are more ports in theUK for them to call at now and as we all know money talks so some cruise lines call where the cost is lower.
But when all the work is done the number will go up again with lots more for all to see and stay in Dover with all the new shops as well as the work done to the port.Again some great photos of the bigger kind of cruise ships now calling in,years ago when the port first open to the cruise ships they were very small,we still welcome them today but also nice to see the real big ones.I would love to go on one of them,my family go a lot some times 3 times a year, but my funds do not go that far.But you never know I have just stopped doing the Lotto and now doing the post code one will give that a try for a few months to see if we can do better.SmileySmileySmiley.I hope you liked the true story about piling .I will tellSmiley one more soon which will make you smile but for myself at the time it looked like ----.Smiley

A few extra pictures now of the Serenade of the Seas as she arrived yesterday morning 06.20. She was a magnificent visitor for sure and hugely welcome...you can see her sequenced arrival below... she left last night at 2100 hours on the button, sailing away in an exotic blaze of glamourous light, heading for Zeebrugge and beyond..

That's Sospan Dau in the foreground there...

Great pictures below there from both Mike and EdSmiley
we really gave her some excellent coverage.
Today we have Balmoral in as well, so the cruise liners are coming thick and fast, we can hardly keep up. And still with us...is the Saga Pearl II. They look great on a blustery fresh morning.

There you are Del, it all helped up there as you trek back and forth supporting the canaries..Smiley
