The DUZGIT HARMONY was bunkering this afternoon with Pride of Burgundy and Pride of Canterbury. Nice to see some new vessels about.

The Turkish-owned, Maltese-flagged bunker DUZGIT HARMONY has been moving around the bay today & was first noticed coming alongside the SPIRIT OF BRITAIN at about 1330.
Unknown whether she was doing trials or actually bunkering.

THE CORALWATER is currently bound for Falmouth, perhaps for refit, so presumably the DUZGIT VENTURE is standing in for her.

The DUZGIT HARMONY & her sister ship DUZGIT VENTURE have both recently made brief nocturnal visits, presumably for berthing trials.

When the sun comes out she'll make a colourful addition of the Dover scene.

As promised some pictures above there of the Nederland Reefer departing for Hamburg a couple of days ago ( January 2nd ) During the process of departure, aided by both tugs Doughty and Dauntless, two ferries passed by in the background, conveniently cruising into picture. She was putting up some smoke as you can see but it all made for something of a dramatic departure. The busy schedule goes on at the Cargo Terminal as Emerald is now in the slot vacated by Nederland Reefer, arriving late last night at around 11.30PM.

And Now Speaking of all things Cargo Related....see the latest New Year information from the Port below..

Port of Dover Cargo Limited - a strong future for cargo at Dover
Dover Harbour Board has secured the long term success of cargo operations within the Port of Dover...
_________________________________________________________________________________

Dover Harbour Board has secured the long term success of cargo operations within the Port of Dover as work forges ahead to create new facilities in Dover’s Western Docks.

The Board has reached an agreement to incorporate the Port Services Division of George Hammond PLC into its wider Port business, ensuring growth and long term loyal customer continuity into the new Dover Western Docks Revival era.

Established in 1767, Kent-based George Hammond PLC developed the general cargo business in Dover more than 60 years ago and, with the support of the Port of Dover, has operated the Dover Cargo Terminal successfully since its inception in 1990. From 31 December 2016, however, the cargo stevedoring operation will transfer to Port of Dover Cargo Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of Dover Harbour Board.

The new business will be overseen by Sam Stewart who has over 30 years’ experience in the ports and shipping industry – holding senior positions for cargo operations within busy cargo terminals in the South East of England.

George Hammond PLC’s dedicated senior team and staff will transfer to Port of Dover Cargo Limited with the Port Services Division to preserve existing expertise while enabling the business to grow.

Port of Dover Chief Executive, Tim Waggott, said: "These are exciting times with work on the Dover Western Docks Revival underway. The project is the single biggest investment ever undertaken by the Port of Dover with over £200m committed to deliver the first phase.
"This new cargo infrastructure, however, is only part of the story. We want to future-proof cargo services so that we can deliver on our commitment to be the best port in the world for the benefit of our customers and community."

"I and my fellow Directors of Port of Dover Cargo Limited, Barbara Buczek and Shaun Pottage, would like to thank James and John Ryeland, Paul Lee, and everyone from George Hammond PLC for their support. We welcome Sam Stewart to our team and we look forward to working with staff transferring to Port of Dover Cargo Limited in order to deliver the best of service to all our customers in the future."

James Ryeland, Managing Director at George Hammond PLC, said: "While it is with some sadness that a chapter in Hammond history has come to an end, the considerable investment in the Dover Western Docks Revival by Dover Harbour Board will pave the way to a new and diverse era in cargo.

"As a subsidiary of Dover Harbour Board, Port of Dover Cargo Limited will be best placed to take long term investment decisions aligned to generating significant growth and long term employment security."

Yes indeed Mike I can see the Olympic Triton out there and its a fascinating ship. I had a stab at some pictures but although it was a nice bright day yesterday the pictures are grey/blue. But I have an old program that may be able to breathe some life into them. Will see what I can do with those today.

Stooging up & down well offshore between Dover & Folkestone today is the big & very sophisticated ‘Offshore Support Vessel’ OLYMPIC TRITON.

With the AFON CEFNI moved off down towards Folkestone & lying closer inshore & advertising herself on AIS as ‘Guard Ship’ it looks as though the power cable repairs [post 3299] are about to start.

Too far away for anything more than rubbish photos from me but I’m sure that Mr.B will have things in hand . . . .

This marker buoy washed up on the beach very early yesterday and caused a modicum of bewilderment. However the weather the day before as we all know...look at those Lifeboat pictures further below... was very rough and miserable indeed, and although buoys generally withstand all that, this one didn't.

Later on, some two hours later, it was a delight to see so many people out and about in the sunshine. The day before which was officially New Years Day, not a soul ventured forth and who would blame them. I thought therefore I would take a celebratory picture of the strollers not thinking any further about the buoy....but lo and behold when I looked at the pictures later, there she was in these later pictures somehow having made it half a mile in the direction of the marina. Making its self-propelled way homeward no doubt...
A crop of the above pic below...

For those further afield who asked to see a picture of the White Cliffs of Dover..
you can see the awesome scale there and... unwisely, people standing too close to the edge. PB.

We will have some pictures of the departing Nederland Reefer following soon.

THREE BODIES FOUND: See the excellent report from the scene from Ed in post 3370 below.
Following on from there, here are a further couple of pictures of the Lifeboat in action at the time in the abysmal conditions. These pictures are poor quality and almost unusable, but because of the tragic story about the three bodies found at the base of the White Cliffs yesterday we must include them, as they show the terrible windy rough conditions these guys were working in yesterday. Its a very sad story once again. No doubt more information will emerge in due course. Through the bleak weather the black winged gull flew into the second shot....an omen perhaps...

LATEST INFORMATION FROM THE BBC: A brother and a sister are believed to have been among three people found dead at the foot of cliffs in Dover. As mentioned previously their bodies were discovered at Langdon Cliffs on Sunday during a search for another man, whose body was also found.
Kent Police said the "siblings" were believed to be in their 60s and from the Cheshire area. Their deaths are not thought to be connected to the death of the first man, who is believed to be in his 40s, from the Greater Manchester area.
Police said the deaths were not being treated as suspicious.
They have appealed for anyone who saw a man and a woman in dark-coloured wet weather clothing at the top of the cliffs in the period between Boxing Day and New Year's Day to contact them.

Good to see those pix further below Mike. Good work there. Always interest in anything in or near the sea and fascinated to see the arrival of a new footbridge there. Once again well done to Ed for the post below. Ace work. PaulB.

Lifeboat, inshore lifeboat and helicopter involved in the recovery operation in Langdon Bay yesterday afternoon in driving rain. I assumed that this was an exercise but sadly it transpires that three bodies had been discovered at the foot of the cliffs.

& now for Something Completely Different [as they used to say in Monty Python]

Not exactly 'Sea News' but there is definitely a marine connection as the Shakespeare Beach footbridge has the spans installed in filthy weather on Sunday afternoon.

The bridge won't be open to the public until the Spring.

Above there we have our very own lightshow for New Years Eve..no expense spared...you see, we can match all those capital city displays all around the world, thanks to the Spirit of Britain moving gently across the harbour two nights ago in amazingly flat calm reflective conditions.SmileySmiley

Pictures taken prior to the onset of foggy times...the one below is from the same evening...it was a tad too dark so had to push it to its extremities, which of course can be painful....

Another pic above there of the Southern Bay. She slipped in to join us from Vlissingen in the dead of the wintry night on Wednesday...and slipped away again last night heading off to Rotterdam. The Christmas period ended early for some, with both the rescue services working hard and the cargo guys...solid work done by all.

Thanks to Ed for the other up-to-the-minute picture below of the Southern Bay.

A cracking well done to Mike who got the scoop below of the Belgian Helicopter in rescue operation by the famous white cliffs. We pinned that one at the top as it was a fascinating scoop indeed with great pictures. Don't miss that one (post 3363).

Many thanks to all who posted re the cancer therapy huge-effort Boxing Day Dip (3354 and 3359 )
Thanks to Dawn, Rita, Gillian and Colette.

I certainly echo Sarah & Paul’s remarks about the RNLI & all the different national life-saving organisations.
A Belgian lifeboat & helicopters from both nations joined the three British lifeboats & other craft during the ASSANAT search & rescue operation on Tuesday & in July 1999 the Belgian Air Force helped out the Brits in a cliff rescue operation at Dover.

Six young lads had been trapped by the tide in Langdon Bay, just below the Coastguard station & altho’ the Dover lifeboat & the Coastguard Cliff Rescue team attended it was decided to use a helicopter.

I was a little late on the scene & missed the Dover lifeboat launching & recovering their inflatable ‘Y’ boat.

The British rescue helicopter [based up in Norfolk after the closure of Manston] was indisposed so Belgian Sea King RS02 came across & very efficiently lifted out the lads & landed them at the Coastguard Station before returning to their base at Koksijde

A very successful ‘international’ operation with superb flying.

Like the British SAR Sea Kings, the Belgian Sea Kings have now been withdrawn.

What a lovely day it was for the annual Boxing Day dip, almost Springlike Smiley

I am always full of admiration for the brave Boxing Day dippers so it was great to see the elements were kind to them on the day. Many are raising a much needed boost to their chosen charity and having fun at the same time. A Big Well Done to Gillian Smissen for raising funds for the Harmony Therapy Trust, your energy is boundless (see the Dippers below in post 3354 ) Smiley

On a separate note my heart goes out to the families and friends of the crew from the stricken fishing vessel in the channel.

Gillian is not only a very valued co-Trustee of The Harmony Therapy Trust, but is one of our most successful and dedicated fundraisers. Thank you Gillian for gathering the friends and supporters of the Trust into this most amazing fund raising event in Dover. You began 2016 fund raising and ended the year making this probably the best fund raising December in the Trust's history to date.

With Gillian Smissen at the BOXING DAY DIP- Raising Funds for The Harmony Therapy Trust.

FROM RITA COUZINS of the HARMONY THERAPY TRUST
____________________________________________

Lovely to see you all again on Boxing Day, such a fun day and all being well an amazing amount of money pledged for THTT - guessing around £2000.

Thinking about the Sea News blog for the DoverForum I thought it would be good to sum up the efforts Gillian has made to raise much needed funds during this current year:

In January Gillian, with the help of Dover Athletic Supporters Club held a quiz night, so popular and successful that there wasn't a seat spare. Local people had generously donated raffle prizes and as well it being a very enjoyable evening the amazing sum of £1011.

In the summer Gillian celebrated an important birthday (I won't say which one but it is L in Roman numerals). Held out at Farthingloe Barn she requested donations to the Trust and also organised a generous raffle. In December at the Bluebird Rooms Gillian put her greatest effort into organising the Pink & Green Ball (the Trust's colours) and an amazing £2900 was raised from ticket sales, raffle and sale of our Happiness Kits. The finale to her year was on Boxing Day she persuaded ten people to join her in a mid-day dip into the harbour waters and has probably raised a further £2000.

Of the 290 people currently benefitting from therapy there are 15 residents of the Dover area which is £1500 of our budget. Some have therapies over a period of six months or if it is a hospice referral it could be a quick as six weeks. Who knows from where next year's referrals will come from, but we are estimating it could be about 1000 from across the county. When we can we also give a couple of sessions to their carers who we refer to as 'the forgotten heroes'.

Without the enthusiastic support of Gillian and over 60 therapists across the county the Trust would not be the success it has been so far, and we know there are many medical professionals from across Kent and beyond dealing with the cancers and many other life-altering illnesses, that may benefit from holistic therapy and the time the therapists give to people when attending them.

I hope there is something above that you will find useful for your blog.

Hope you have a healthy and Happy New Year.

Rita Couzins
Financial and Founder Trustee

Thanks to ColetteB for organising this information for Sea News. And speaking of ColetteB there she is below on the right with Gillian on the left.
Also to say a big well done to all the people raising funds for all sorts of charities at the Boxing Day Dip ( see the pictures 3354).

Excellent pictures below Sarah - Many thanks for those.
Just to echo what Sarah says below there about the great work the search and rescue teams from the RNLI and the Coastguard did yesterday...and indeed the guys from Belgium too who also helped with the search for the crew of the upturned fishing vessel. The update is
one person rescued early and taken to hospital
one person rescued from the water later in the day, taken to hospital but sadly died later
one person still missing.
